A white filling, also known as a bonding, is a composite resin that may be used as an alternative to amalgams and veneers. Bondings are an excellent cosmetic alternative for those patients who prefer to avoid the look of silver amalgams or the expense and time required to fabricate porcelain veneers.
Like silver amalgams, bondings are completed in one visit. Unlike amalgam restorations, bondings have a chemical bond to the surrounding tooth structure. Hence the origin of their name. Once the decay has been removed and the surface of the tooth prepared, the exposed tooth structure is cleansed of organic debris and coated with a bonding agent which is cured with a special light. The tooth is then filled with composite resin and is also cured with light which hardens the composite material in a matter of seconds. The final restoration is then adjusted to the patient’s bite and polished leaving a beautifully sculpted, natural-looking restoration.
