Cosmetic Procedures

Cosmetic Recontouring

Cosmetic recontouring or enameloplasty, is a reshaping or smoothing of the enamel of a tooth to alter its apparent position. Through cosmetic recontouring, a crooked tooth or an uneven edge can be smoothed without anesthetic to give a better overall appearance. In simple cases, this can be accomplished in one appointment as long as one is sure that minimal amounts of enamel will be removed. In more advanced cases, an impression of the teeth are taken so that a plaster model can be fabricated. The model is used to determine if the desired results can be had without the removal of too much dentin. This procedure is often used in conjunction with bleaching to give a moderate change to your teeth with minimal costs.

What Are Veneers?

Veneers are a conservative restoration fabricated of porcelain or ceramic materials. They are employed in situations where bleaching and cosmetic recontouring would not provide the patient with the desired result.

What steps are taken during Veneer Appointments

To insure patient satisfaction, an impression of the teeth in question should be taken and a diagnostic wax up should be made. The diagnostic wax up is designed to allow the patient the opportunity to see the suggested final form and function of the veneers. Being made of wax they can be easily modified to the patient’s desire. They also provide the dentist with the ability to foresee any possible issues that might arise from that design. Once both doctor and patient agree on the waxup, a second appointment is made for the preparation of the teeth, provisional fabrication and impression.

At the delivery appointment, the provisionals are removed and the prepared teeth cleaned. The veneers are “tried in” and the patient is asked to view them and ”OK” their placement. The veneers are bonded to the teeth and adjusted and polished. Patients who have habits such as pipe smoking, biting fingernails, opening items with their teeth and bruxing or grinding are encouraged to abstain from that habit to avoid fracture of the veneers. In the case of bruxing and grinding, an orthotic appliance should be fabricated to protect the veneers. The patient should advise the doctor immediately if the bite does not feel correct so that adjustments can be made prior to fracture of the veneers.

When taken care of properly, veneers will last many years. They will feel natural and comfortable and give you a smile you can enjoy and be proud of.

Whitening and Bleaching

Over time our teeth tend to become discolored or stained. Whether this is from smoking, coffee, or any other foods, a beautiful smile could be closer than you think. We offer a safe, inexpensive solution to an unsightly smile. Whitening your teeth is a very simple procedure that can be completed in relatively short period of time.

The Steps In The Whitening Process

The first step in the whitening process is an examination and radiographs to insure there is no decay or periodontal disease. The patient should be reminded that “white” fillings and crowns will not lighten with the bleaching process. Full impressions of your upper and lower arches will be taken to fabricate custom bleaching trays. The trays will be made to fit the teeth with some room for beaching material.

The trays will be fitted and adjusted as necessary. You will be given a kit that includes the bleaching trays, a container for storage and bleaching gel. You will be instructed on how much material to place in your trays and for how long. There is a tendency to place too much material in the trays. Remember there is just a little space for the bleaching material. Using your fingers, you can spread the material around and evenly distribute it. It is incorrect to believe that the longer you wear the trays the faster your teeth will lighten. Generally the material loses its strength in several hours. When getting started bleaching, it is recommended that you wear just the upper tray at first. This will give you the opportunity to see the changes that occur over the first couple of days. Once you are satisfied that the material is working, you can begin using both trays. Within 7-10 days, you will see a significant improvement in the color of your teeth. Your smile will look brighter and younger. We will take before and after photos so that you will be able to compare the amazing transformation. As necessary you may purchase additional bleaching material. Remember to keep your bleaching trays in a safe cool place when not in use.
